Khutba on Sincerity in Action

Slaves of Allah, Allah says, Mighty and Majestic, the translation of which is, “Say: ‘What has My Lord to do with you if you do not call on Him?” Allah has prescribed ihsan and ikhlas in every thing/in every affair. And that certainly applies to dua – the main cause of any supplication being answered is that a person do it sincerely for Allah and that he have absolute certainty that it will be answered.

ikhlas is the reality of the deen and the key to the da’wa/the call of the Messengers. Allah says, the translation of which is, “Who could have a better deen than someone who submits himself completely to Allah and is a good-doer” And He says, “They were only ordered to worship Allah, making their deen sincerely His as people of pure natural belief, and to establish salat and pay zakat – that is the correct deen.”

Abu Hurayra narrated from the Messenger of Allah in a hadith qudsi that Allah says, “I have no need whatsoever for partners. So if someone does an action not just for My sake but for the sake of another alongside Me, I will toss aside that person and his act of associating others with Me.”

There is a vast number of hadith from the Messenger of Allah in this vein and stressing this point.

One of the ulama said, “Smart people have looked into the meaning of ikhlas and in the end, they found that its meaning could be boiled down to one thing – that all of a person’s movements and stillnesses, whether in public or private, are for Allah alone and not tainted by the wants of the self or appetites or by dunyawi considerations.”

Slaves of Allah, Sahl ibn Abdillah al-Tustari said, “There is nothing harder on the self that ikhlas, for it has no portion of it.” Having ikhlas in acts of worship, indeed having ikhlas in all that you do including those things which are categorised as being mubah/permissible, is an incredible thing. For it is through ikhlas that Allah gives you a lot for a little. As for those who show off and set ikhlas aside, Allah gives them nothing no matter how substantial what they do or give is. It may well be that one dirham of the first is worth more with Him than one hundred thousand dirhams of the second. The worth of an action is determined by the worth of what is in the heart, by the degree of a person’s belief and the extent to which He exalts his Lord. That is the secret of the ikhlas that Allah has placed in the hearts of His true slaves.

Slaves of Allah, on the flipside, we find that any act of obedience to Allah that is done without ikhlas, without sincerity, has no value whatsoever and will go completely unrewarded. Indeed, it may even open up that person to a harsh punishment, even if the act of obedience was of a type that is considered great in the eyes of Allah, such as spending one’s wealth in charitable ways, or fighting or seeking knowledge of the deen. This is stated clearly in a hadith narrated by Abu Hurayra. The Messenger of Allah said, “The first person to be judged on the Day of Qiyama will be a man who died a martyr. He will be brought forth and informed of this blessing his Lord gave him and he will know it. Then his Lord will say to him, ‘What did you do to bring this about?’ And the man will reply, ‘I fought for Your sake until I was martyred.’ Thereupon Allah will say, ‘You lie. Rather you fought so that people might say you were brave and they did indeed say it.’ Then He will command that the man be dragged on his face and cast into the Fire. Then another will come who studied knowledge and taught and recited the Quran. He will be brought forth and informed of this blessing his Lord gave him and he will know it. Then his Lord will ask him, ‘What did you do?’ and he will say, ‘I studied and taught knowledge and recited Quran for Your sake,’ So Allah will say, ‘You lie. Rather you studied so that people might say you were an alim and a qari and they did indeed say it.’ Then He will command that the man be dragged on his face and cast into the Fire. We seek protection with Allah from that. Then another will come whom Allah made rich and to whom Allah gave all sorts of wealth. He will be brought forth and informed of this blessing his Lord gave him and he will know it. Then his Lord will ask him, ‘What did you do with it?’ and he will reply, ‘I spent my wealth in every single way that you love wealth to be spent.’ So Allah will say, ‘You lie. Rather you did what you did so that people might say that you were a generous man and they did indeed say it.’ Then He will command that the man be dragged on his face and cast into the Fire.”

It is the ikhlas in an action that makes it worthy in the eyes of Allah, not the action itself, not even if it is giving one’s wealth, or being martyred or reciting the Quran. They must be done purely and sincerely for Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.

It has been reported that Abu Hamid al-Ghazali once heard that if a person is able to have ikhlas, to be sincere to Allah for forty days, founts of wisdom will spring forth from his heart and emerge on his tongue, so he said, “I was sincere to Allah for forty days, but nothing sprang forth. So I was sincere to Allah for another forty days and still nothing sprang forth. So I mentioned this to one of the people of inward knowledge and he said to me, ‘You had ihklas was for the sake of wisdom, you did not have ikhlas for the sake of Allah. You were sincere so that wisdom could spring forth and emerge on your tongue, you were not sincere for the sake of Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.’” Allah does not let even the smallest and most trivial of actions done with sincerity go to waste.

The Messenger of Allah said, “A man from my Umma will be called forth before all created beings on the Day of Qiyama and ninety-nines scrolls will be unfurled in front of him, each of them stretching forth as far as the eye can see. Then he will be asked, ‘Do you deny any of [these wrong actions]? Have My scribes wronged you in any way?’ And he will reply, ‘No, my Lord.’ Then he will be asked, ‘Do you have any excuse or any right action to offer?’ And he will reply, ‘No, my Lord.’ But it will then be said to him, ‘On the contrary. You do have a right action. You do have a right action. You will not be wronged today.’ And a small slip of paper will be brought forth, upon which will be written, ‘Ashhadu an la ilaha illa-llah wa anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh – I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.’ So the man will ask, ‘My Lord, what is this piece of paper? What is this piece of paper? What can it possibly do in the face of all these scrolls full of wrong actions?’ And it will be said to him, ‘You will not be wronged on this day.’ And the scrolls will be placed on one side of the scales and the small piece of paper on the other, and the paper will outweigh them.”

Ibn Uyayna said, “Al-Mutarrif ibn Abdillah used to say in his duas, ‘O Allah, I ask for Your forgiveness for anything I have done, claiming that it is for Your face, but which my heart sullied and muddied with that which is known to You.”
